Experience Lisbon’s unique culture like a local on this evening walking tour and discover where the musical genre Fado was born. As you walk through some of Lisbon's old districts, your guide will explain the history of Fado, which started here in the 1820s. Along several stops, enjoy traditional small dishes and 'petiscos' (local finger food) and listen to Fado live performances, songs about lost love and 'saudade,' a feeling of longing.

Sailors, fishermen and sea merchants, often away from home, were the pioneers of this musical genre, and would sing the beautiful and melancholic music with a feeling of saudade, an emotion of longing or homesickness for their distant loved ones.

Currently, Fado is considered part of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage. It is more than just a genre, it is a way of feeling and the sung expression of the Portuguese soul.

You will pass by historical neighborhoods such as Bairro Alto, Alfama and Mouraria, to learn more about the traditional aspects of life, so you can get a feel of the city like a true local, a ‘Lisboeta’! Along the tour you will try a variety of food samples and wines and get to see real live performances from ‘fadistas’ alongside the traditional sound of the Portuguese guitar.

We’ll start in Bairro Alto, one of the most traditional areas to enjoy Fado in Lisbon. Here you’ll have some food samples and a glampse on the Fado music gender. Afterwards, we’ll walk towards downtown and go through the Mouraria, one of the most traditional districts in Lisbon, where according to the traditions, the first lady who sang the Fado for the first time was born: Severa. Feel the Mozarabian district and it’s narrow and full of charm streets. Here you’ll have a cultural insight about this music gender and some more food and drink samplings. We’ll finish this tour with a beautiful walking around the castle hill towards Alfama, where we’ll finish the tour and have a diversified food sampling along with a Fado Show. You’ll feel like a true Lisboeta.

Note:  Starting from 1st March 2019 this activity will become a walking tour. It will not include a full-course dinner but a multiple sampling of traditional finger food and local delicacies like "Pataniscas". It also includes a live performance in two different Fado houses.

The Castle of São Filipe, also known as São Filipe Fort and São Filipe Fort, is a fortification located in the City of Setúbal.

Setúbal has been occupied since prehistory, successively by Phoenicians, Carthaginians and Romans.

Privileged Atlantic port, the first defensive structure of this important borough was a wall begun at the time of the king D. Afonso IV (1325-57) and completed in the following reign, under D. Pedro I (1356-67), with the function of containing the assaults of pirates and corsairs, usually from North Africa.

Taken together in the period of the Philippine dynasty, its relevance is demonstrated by the fact that the very king D. Philip I (1580-1598) personally witnessed, in 1582, the launching of the foundation stone of the new fortification, with the architect and engineer Italian military officer Filippo Terzi (1520-1597).

In the XVIII century the Chapel in its interior acquired its coat of tiles, signed by Policarpo de Oliveira Bernardes (1736). During the Pombaline consulate (1750-1777) it would not have been immune to the 1755 earthquake and was used as the School of Gunners.
