Spend a day away from the busy cosmopolitan capital of Lisbon and dive in the ecclesiastic heritage and rural areas of the inner central Portugal in this private tour.
During this tour you will visit three of the most impressive medieval monasteries (UNESCO Classified) and learn not only about its architecture and aesthetics but also the relationship between these sites and Portugal as a Kingdom and Catholicism as cornerstone during the country’s foundation.
This may also depart from Fátima !

You’ll depart from Lisbon at 8.00 a.m. being picked up at your Lisbon hotel.  An early start for the 2 hour drive you’ll have ahead to reach our first stop – Tomar. This city famous for the Castle and Convent that homed the Order of the Knights Templar even after it was officially extinct in Europe – it survived in Portugal and was even an important part of the Age of Discoveries. Drive panoramically around Tomar towards the Aqueduct of Pegões – structure built to supply water to the Convent. On our first stop your escort will fill you in on the historical details of Tomar and the Templars just before taking you back towards the first monument. You’ll tour inside the Castle and Convent to appreciate the beautiful architecture of Medieval, Gothic, Manuelino and Renaissance aesthetics.

After an early start, an Abbey lunch is in order. You’ll stop for lunch already in Batalha !

After this unique gastronomic experience, we’ll move towards the Monastery of Batalha. Ordered construction after the Portuguese won the Spanish in battle and maintained independence, this precious piece of architecture mostly Gothic and Manuelino, took over 150 years to be concluded and is part of the network of Royal Pantheons.

Finally, our third piece of ascetic architecture is situated in Alcobaça. The Alcobaça Abbey marks the early years of the Cistercian Order. Built according to the poverty vows taken and the simplicity preached in the early years of the Saint Bernardine Rule, the monks derived from the Cluny Order and were granted the protection of this area in the reconquering of land from the Moors. The austere and plain early gothic architecture would come to produce a deep visual impact in the unornate open aisles of the Church.

This has been quite a long day certainly filled of amazing photos and memories. We will return to Lisbon after this last stop for some very deserved rest!
